A new form of therapy
The Aberystwyth Living Well Group recently went on their first outing – a visit to The National Library of Wales, based here in Aberystwyth. All agreed it was well worth the trek up the hill! The group was given a behind the scenes tour, including information on how to access the collections, learning about triage and surgery in the conservation unit, then a tour of the latest ‘collecting’ exhibition in the library’s art gallery, upstairs. Everyone was impressed. One member said it was like being on holiday and appreciated the calm, atmosphere, describing the library as a serene, therapeutic space. Another member was fascinated by the techniques the conservators use to care for the collections, including washing paper and ancient manuscripts. If she’d known there were careers in this area when she was at school, she said then her life might have taken on a different direction.
The group wish to thank all the dedicated staff for sharing their time and knowledge. No doubt, some of us will be returning with our history detective hats on, as we seek out and submerge ourselves in pasts, both ancient and new.
The Living Well Group supports people affected by cancer. As well as providing support and shared understanding, the group also offers opportunities to learn new skills and discover new interests. For members it’s often a respite from talking about health problems and being in and around more clinical environments. We meet every month at HAHAV’s Living Well Centre, Plas Antaron, with guest speakers, activities, and visits to places of interest. If you would like to join the group, then call Susie on 01970 611 550. Upcoming activities, include a visit to Ynyslas National Nature Reserve, a photography workshop, and a gong bath experience, using healing sounds to soothe and relax.
